The first post of any website always has the weight of the world hanging off it I feel. For one thing, you have a totally blank sheet in front of you and feel like you should write something of importance – ahem, spoiler alert, I rarely write anything of importance! However, on the other hand, this is the first post of a new blog, who the heck is reading anyway!
Well dear reader, just in case you are out there I will dive in and tell you what this site is about and what it’s definitely not about.
What It Is About
I have always wanted to create a hub where we can talk about and celebrate all those things which make us happy. Not in a glossy lifestyle way, where I will appear on Instagram having just cooked a 6 course meal while simultaneously showing a small class of children how to macrame – all without smudging my make-up of course! But in a very real way, the small things which brighten our day and make us smile, even if the rest of the 23 hours and 55 minutes is not that great.
I want us to all find ways to increase our happiness levels together.
A lot of that I feel is down to just being aware. Bringing ourselves back to the present moment and saying, I’m ok right now in this minute – I don’t need to worry about the future or regret the past – I can just focus on what is good now.
And the second part is gratitude. It’s easy to let our ‘what if’s’ and ‘I wishes’ run away with us, but if we focus on thinking actually life is pretty amazing right now in so many ways, it tends to make us feel more content and contentment leaves space for happiness.
Is this always easy? Nope. Is it worth it? YES. Even if we only increase our happiness a tiny bit each day, after a month or a year we find ourselves smiling a lot more.
What It Is Not About
So you may be nodding your head to this by now or you may be thinking, who the heck is this writer, Pollyanna?
Am I saying that if you are in a bad place emotionally you should just snap your fingers and feel better. No, not at all. This site isn’t about saying to anyone that they should or shouldn’t do something or feel something.
It’s not me saying, ‘wow look at me I’m so effing happy, why aren’t you?’ Do I have dark moments, bad
weeks days and sometimes feel like what the heck is happening? Of course I do. But in those moments it’s often the tiny things that get me through. It’s sitting in the park, feeling the sun on my face and feeling joy in the abundance of nature all around me. Note: You may think that sounds totally sappy, and if you do this blog might not be for you, because I tend to say things like that a lot 😉
I want us all to share those moments – tell each other what we love, what we celebrate, what we find joy in. So that we can start to drown out all the talk that tells us that everything is negative and that the world is getting worse. Sometimes human nature seems to take a backstep but overall the world is improving in so many ways – let’s help to make it even better.
